Syracuse, N.Y. – On August 20, 2022 at 10:09 p.m., Syracuse firefighters were alerted by the 911 Center to a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian at 401 Butternut Street. Updates indicated that a vehicle struck a structure and there may be up to six injured. Firefighters from Station 2 (Lodi St.) arrived in 3 mins to find a damaged SUV in the street and another SUV inside of a structure, the Alpine Gentleman’s Club. With a complex scene like this, firefighters act dynamically to prioritize actions based on urgency and risk: determining number of patients, providing patient care, stabilizing vehicles, mitigating fire hazards from vehicle fuels, assessing structural damage, and determining involvement of the structure’s natural gas and electric utilities—to list a few. Firefighters from Station 2 and the Rescue Co. did all of the above last night. Firefighters determined that there were no persons under building debris or pinned by the SUV inside the building.
Firefighters, in conjunction with American Medical Response (AMR) ambulance, provided patient care to three persons. Five AMR ambulances responded due to the number of patients reported initially. One person was transported to a hospital and two other persons were treated, evaluated but declined transport.
