Syracuse Police provide Timeline for Robert Pickett Homicide Investigation: Suspect Released on Appearance Ticket

“Subsequent to the recently enacted criminal justice reform legislation, Bailey was released with an appearance ticket. He did not meet any of the exceptions that would allow him to have been booked for criminally negligent homicide.” Syracuse Police Spokesperson

December 4th, 2019, at approximately 7:50 PM: Syracuse Police Officers responded to 337 1/2 Shonnard St. apt 4, in regards to a fight call where the 911 caller provided very little information. Upon arrival, Officers located and spoke with Robert Pickett, who denied knowledge of a dispute. Pickett did not visibly appear injured, and after investigating the call and not locating anything to support the initial fight call, officers cleared the scene.  

It was later learned that the 911 call had been placed by a witness who had seen Randy Bailey Jr., 31 repeatedly punch Robert Pickett in the head and face while Pickett sat defenseless on a couch. After the incident, Pickett complained of severe head pain but did not seek medical attention.

December 5th, 2019, at 5:11 PM:  During the course of the day, Pickett continued to complain of severe head pain to his live-in girlfriend, who would later call for an ambulance when she noticed Pickett was unresponsive. AMR Ambulance responded and transported Pickett to University Hospital.  

December 7th, 2019, at 1015 AM:  University Hospital staff contacted Syracuse Police and advised that Pickett would not survive his injuries, and an investigation into incident commenced. 

December 9th, 2019, at 2:03 PM:  Robert Pickett was pronounced dead at University Hospital.

February 19th, 2020: The Onondaga County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Pickett had died as a result of blunt head trauma caused by being repeatedly struck in the head and ruled the death a homicide.

February 27th, 2020:  Detectives Walsh and Montalto located Randy Bailey and ultimately charged him with Criminal Negligent Homicide. Subsequent to the recently enacted criminal justice reform legislation, Bailey was released with an appearance ticket.” He did not meet any of the exceptions that would allow him to have been booked for criminally negligent homicide.

 In regards to this investigation, Randy Baily Jr. was charged with the following crimes: 

1 count of Criminally Negligent Homicide.

He was released on an appearance ticket.
