Syracuse City School District Welcomes Individual Mask Choice Beginning Wednesday, March 2nd

On Sunday, February 27th, New York State Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the statewide mask mandate for public schools will expire this Wednesday, March 2nd.

Beginning on Wednesday, the Syracuse City School District will no longer mandate mask wearing in our schools and offices. It will instead become the choice of an individual student, staff member, or visitor whether or not they would like to wear a mask while in SCSD schools and buildings. Masks will continue to be required in schools by all students, staff and visitors until Wednesday.

“Some of our staff and families have expressed that the mask mandate should have expired long ago; others have expressed that it is ending too soon,” Superintendent Jaime Alicea said. “I encourage our entire community to be respectful of the decisions others are making, whether they choose to mask or unmask. We strive for our schools to remain inclusive, safe, and respectful spaces for everyone. I appreciate the cooperation and support of our students, staff, and families as we have pushed through another challenging year adhering to the masking and social distancing guidelines.”

Further guidance from New York State is expected soon; the District will provide updated information to families and staff as it becomes available.
