Syracuse City School District Moves to 100% Remote Instruction for Start of 2020-21 School Year

The Syracuse City School District Board of Education approved the recommendation from Superintendent Jaime Alicea to have all students, PK-12 participate in remote instruction to open the 2020-21 school year.  Students were scheduled to begin the school year using a hybrid model of learning on September 14th but now all grades will begin the year on September 14th with remote instruction through at least October 2, 2020.

“After listening to our families, students and staff it is clear that the majority of them are in favor of a remote instruction/virtual learning model,” said Superintendent Jaime Alicea.  “While the hybrid model we had initially planned would have allowed for a safe and healthy opening, it is imperative that everyone feels comfortable within the learning and work environment, which is why we have decided to begin the school year virtually. We will continue to work with all of our stakeholders to address concerns and questions as they come up.”

The school district will continue to follow the recommendations of the Center for Disease Control, New York State Department of Health, New York State Department of Education and Onondaga County Health Department as it pertains to the re-opening of our schools.  In preparation, the district will continue hosting online co-video chats with families and staff to discuss and address any questions and/or concerns that they have.
