State Fair Food 2019: Fried Specialties’ “Sudden Death” Joins its Roster of Wild Deep-Fried Sandwiches

From the people who brought you The Defibrillator, it’s The Sudden Death. Great New York State Fair veteran food vendor Fried Specialties continues its assault on heart health with its newest creation. The Sudden Death is two hamburgers, stuffed with macaroni and cheese, pork belly and jalapenos. The whole thing is wrapped in a basket weave of bacon strips and then, of course, it is deep fried. A dipping cup of melted cheddar cheese completes the coronary invasion, though Habanero sauce is available for those who like their calories to be flaming hot.

“This burger is definitely not approved by four out of five doctors and I don’t suggest a regular diet of Sudden Deaths, but when you come to the Fair, it’s a time to try something fun and wild. Fried Specialties has been one of our most creative food creators for some time now and people can’t wait to try what they’ve come up with,” said Troy Waffner, Fair Director.

Breakfast Burger

The Sudden Death burger is only part of what’s new at Fried Specialties this year. Start the day with the new Breakfast Burger, which is a half-pound burger topped with sausage, bacon, ham, eggs and hash browns. Or, for something sweet, try the new Deep-Fried Banana Bread.

These new products join Fried Specialties’ famous crazy foods, including The Defibrillator (a burger with deep-fried pickles, cheese curds, bacon and cheddar cheese, with two grilled cheese sandwiches for buns) and the New York Harvester (a deep-fried Thanksgiving dinner on a bun of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cheese and cranberry sauce on sourdough bread with gravy for dipping) and the Heart Attack (two Hofmann hot dogs stuffed with chili, cheddar cheese and a pickle, wrapped in bacon and, of course, deep fried and skewered on a stick. Topped with cheddar cheese and jalapenos, dressed in chocolate sauce and with a piece of Hershey’s chocolate.) The Heart Attack was voted favorite new crazy food of the 2018 Fair. The vendor also offers a wide selection of deep-fried candy and treats.

Founded in 1841, the Great New York State Fair is America’s third largest state fair. The Fair showcases the best of New York agriculture, provides top-quality entertainment and is a key piece of Governor Cuomo’s CNY Rising strategy of growing the Central New York economy through tourism. Fair attendance is up more than 40% since the beginning of more than $120 million in investments, with 1.27 million people attending the Fair in 2018. The 2019 Fair runs from August 21 to September 2. Information about the Fair can be found here.

The New York State Fairgrounds is a 375-acre exhibit and entertainment complex that operates all year. A year-round schedule of events is available here.
