Project Resurfaced Nearly Two Miles of Key Commuter Route Linking City of Syracuse to Western Suburbs
Investment Complements “CNY Rising” – The Region’s Comprehensive Strategy to Revitalize Communities and Grow the Economy
New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez announced today the completion of a $3.2 million project that rehabilitated a 1.6-mile stretch of State Route 5 from Myrtle Street in the City of Syracuse, through the Village of Solvay to the State Route 5 Bypass Ramp in the Town of Geddes, Onondaga County. The project resurfaced the roadway and made other improvements to enhance safety and improve travel conditions along an important commuter route that links the City of Syracuse to its western suburbs. It also provides access to State Route 695 in Fairmount and the major retailers and restaurants in the area.
“Under Governor Hochul’s leadership, New York State is making critically important investments that will modernize our infrastructure to meet the demands of the 21st Century and keep our communities thriving,” Commissioner Dominguez said. “This project improves pedestrian mobility and enhances the resiliency of a critically important roadway, ensuring the continued flow of people and goods through this heavily traveled corridor in Central New York for many years to come.”
The roadway was milled and resurfaced with a 4-inch asphalt overlay that will improve durability and create a smoother riding surface. Additionally, drainage systems were cleaned, new pavement markings were added, and an updated traffic signal detection system was installed. Sidewalks and pedestrian ramps were also updated to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Sen. John Mannion said, “This important transportation project is part of our ongoing commitment to investing in the infrastructure that keeps our communities connected and our economy moving forward. The improvements to State Route 5 will benefit commuters, businesses, and visitors while also supporting the continued growth and vitality of Central New York.”
According to Assembly Transportation Chair William Magnarelli, “I’m pleased to see this project in the 129th Assembly District completed. This segment of State Route 5 is an important thoroughfare for the Westside of Syracuse and the Town of Geddes. The resurfacing means easier commutes and tear on vehicles and improved safety.”
Drivers are asked to use caution when traveling through the highway work zones and pay attention to all traffic control devices, including signs and flaggers.
Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
