Syracuse, N.Y. – Mayor Walsh announced “dig once” road work is under way on West Genesee Street on the Westside. Syracuse Water Department crews have closed traffic at the intersection of West Genesee and Willis Avenue beginning Wednesday, July 20 to install a new water main pipe. While roadwork is being completed, West Genesee Street from Avery Avenue to Milton Avenue, and Willis Avenue from Erie Street to Cayuga Street will be closed to through traffic, with a single lane open to local traffic during work hours. Detours will be in place in the surrounding area until work at the intersection is complete.
Work is expected to take place from 7:00 a.m. until approximately 3:30 p.m. until Friday, July 22. Actual project start dates and timeframes are contingent on favorable weather.
This work by the Department of Water is part of the West Genesee Dig Once project that will continue throughout the year. Dig Once projects signify an enhanced level of coordination with utility providers (water, sewer, telecommunication, gas, etc.) with the goal of replacing and repairing as much underground infrastructure as possible to minimize any future excavations made in newly paved roads.
