Application Deadline: Saturday, July 31st, 2021
Now in its 17th year with more than 450 graduates, FOCUS Greater Syracuse and Syracuse University will accept applications for the 2021 Citizens Academy Class through July 31.
Topics that will be covered include:
Community Vitality; Economic Vitality; Environmental Stewardship; Schools, Scholars and Resources; Public Safety; Planning, Land Use and Transportation; Local Government Budget and Finance; and the Organization of Local Government.
The 2021 session will run for nine weeks on Wednesday evenings from Sept. 15 to Nov. 17, 2020 and may be in a virtual format if necessary. The class is held from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. with a boxed meal provided at sites throughout the community. Each night, government officials and representatives convene to discuss challenges and opportunities their departments face and to answer participants’ questions. The COVID-19 vaccination or wearing of masks may be required to attend in-person meetings, based on guidance from the County.
Class size is limited.
The program is open to all who live or work in Onondaga County and are 18 years of age or older.
- Class enrollment fee is $50.
- Payment can be made in two $25 payments.
- Limited scholarships are available upon request.

Citizens Academy is a collaboration between the City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, Syracuse University and FOCUS Greater Syracuse to inform citizens about how local governments are organized and how services are funded and delivered.
