Ironworkers Recruit Apprentices

SYRACUSE, NY (readMedia)– The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Ironworkers, Local 60, will conduct recruitment from April 1, 2008 through March 3, 2009 for 10 apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.

Applications will be available at the local, 500 W. Genesee St., Syracuse, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the first Tuesday of each month during the recruitment period.

The committee requires that applicants:

∙ Be at least 18 years old.

∙ Have a high school or general equivalency diploma — transcript for education credit required after acceptance for the program.

∙ Have lived within the local’s geographic jurisdiction for at least six months prior to applying – all of Broome, Tioga, Cortland, Onondaga, Oswego, Wayne, Tompkins, Lewis and Cayuga Counties; and parts of Jefferson, Schuyler, Seneca, Chenango and Madison Counties.

∙ Provide proof of a reliable means of transportation to and from job sites and apprentice classes.

∙ Have a valid NYS driver’s license — apprentices will be required to drive company vehicles.

∙ Be in good physical condition and take an agility test — climb a ladder and work at heights.

∙ Take a pre-employment random drug test and physical examination – at the sponsor’s expense.

∙ If a veteran, present a copy of their DD-214 for veteran’s credit.

∙ Provide a copy of their birth certificate, after acceptance for the program.

For further information, applicants should contact the New York State Department of Labor office located nearest their home or the local at 315-422-8200.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
