Representatives of CNY Solidarity Coalition, Families for Lead Freedom Now!, Syracuse Tenants Union, Syracuse DSA, Community Leaders
Dozens of community members and several organizations plan a press event outside of the County Legislature.
Speakers will assemble inside, in front of the county legislature during the 1:00 PM public hearing portion of the county legislature.
401 Montgomery St, Syracuse, NY
Tuesday July 5th 12:00 PM
Issue: An important role of the County Government is to care for the health and well-being of its residents, and yet the county executive has wanted to push through – behind closed doors – a risky venture of an aquarium using taxpayer money, while leaving its residents behind.
“The county may have a sudden surplus of $200 million, but residents are still facing economic hardships. In areas of Syracuse, a black child has a one in four chance of being poisoned by lead in the home and yet the county cut testing services instead of improving them, and the city-wide ordinance is yet to be properly enforced. Home health services are inadequate to address the needs of the community, and mental health resources need expanding. Our housing is deteriorating, and our schools need more resources to give every child a fair start.
The decision for how to use these funds SHOULD be made with the public involved, and NOT behind closed doors.
We ask for much needed funds to turn around the lead poisoning crisis affecting hundreds of children in Onondaga county annually and to use the funds to help restore our housing – these important investments will directly improve the health and well-being of our communities.”
