Syracuse, N.Y. – Shortly before 9:35 A.M. today, several people in the Eastwood neighborhood of Syracuse called 911 to report a house on fire at 523 South Collingwood Avenue. A fire unit that was nearby arrived on scene almost immediately, and found thick black smoke issuing from the two-story, single family home.
It was initially reported that an occupant might be trapped in a second floor bedroom. In an effort to gain entry and search that area as quickly as possible, firefighters used a ladder to enter the bedroom through a window. After a thorough search of that room and the rest of the house, it was determined that no one was home.
It took approximately twenty minutes to fully extinguish the blaze, and the majority of the damage was contained to the first floor. No injuries were reported. Members of the Fire Investigation Bureau are currently working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. The Syracuse Police Department, AMR, and National Grid also responded to the incident.
