Honor Flight Syracuse Celebrates 100 Year Young Veteran Wallace Roher with Centenarian Salute Monday

SHHH! Don’t let Wallace find out – it’s a surprise!

Honor Flight of Syracuse is excited to announce its Centenarian Salute to World War II war hero Wallace Roher on Monday, January 10th at 2:00 p.m. at the Roher residence in Manlius. Honor Flight Syracuse and Wallace’s family are trying to keep this a surprise for Wallace.

Born on January 10, 1922, Roher enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. During World War II, Roher served in the China-Burma-India Theater as a Direction-Finding Evaluator (DFE), responsible for providing assistance to distressed US aircraft from inside control towers. While serving at a tower in Kunming, China, Roher worked with “The Flying Tigers,” a group of American volunteer pilots and ground crew who served China in its war against Japan. To help us celebrate, Honor Flight’s team of volunteers have coordinated a special caravan with music serenade, in addition to a special Flag Proclamation from Congressman John Katko presented by the 174th ATKW Honor Guard.

Honor Flight Syracuse (HFS) is asking the public to support this special outdoor salute. To show support and help celebrate, guests are invited to gather at Roher residence. Those wishing to meet up prior to the event can do so at the designated staging area, the Delphi Falls Fire Department, 2260 Oran Delphi Road in Manlius at 1:30 p.m. HFS encourages the  public to wear masks and social distance during this Centurion Salute.

Honor Flight Network was formed in 2005 to transport veterans at no cost to Washington, DC to visit their memorials. Honor Flight’s current focus is WWII and Korean War veterans, as well as those from any conflict with a terminal illness. Honor Flight Syracuse, currently led by President Kevin Bradley, conducted its inaugural mission in October 2012 for 27 veterans and since then, over 1,050 veterans. HFS serves ten counties in the greater Central NY area, and one of 130 Regional Hubs in the National Honor Flight Network.

Honor Flight Syracuse flies Central NY heroes to Washington, DC to visit and reflect together at their memorials. In accordance with Honor Flight policy, priority order for each mission is given to elder WWII veterans, Korean War veterans and terminally ill veterans from any era.  HFS generally flies two missions per year, one in April and one in September.  HFS is continually accepting applications for our future missions. Veteran applications are prioritized in the order in which they are received, except in extraordinary circumstances.
