Healing the House Divided: A Conversation with Congressman John Katko

Rep. John Katko

John Katko talks career and politics with Syracuse University Vice Chancellor: April 14

Four-term elected U.S. Representative John Katko (R-NY) will join Syracuse University Vice Chancellor, Provost, Chief Academic Officer and political science scholar Gretchen Ritter for a discussion reflecting on his legislative record, the polarized political climate and his experience during his eight years in Congress.

The event, scheduled for April 14, 2022, at 4 p.m. EST in the Dr. Paul and Natalie Strasser Legacy Room (220 Eggers Hall), is open to students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public.

Katko was elected to Congress in November 2014 to represent the 24th Congressional District of New York, which includes Onondaga, Cayuga and Wayne Counties and the western portion of Oswego County. In his first term in office, as chair of the House Homeland Security panel’s subcommittee on transportation security, the representative sponsored 27 bills, 13 of which passed and two of which were enacted.

In 2020, the Lugar Center of Georgetown University ranked Katko the second most bipartisan member of the House of Representatives based on his support for legislation that has won the backing of Democrats and Republicans in Congress. In 2021, the Center for Effective Lawmaking, a collaboration between Vanderbilt University and the University of Virginia, ranked Katko as the third most effective House Republican.

A former federal prosecutor, Katko was just one of 10 Republicans who bucked the partisan trend and voted to impeach President Donald J. Trump for “incitement of insurrection” leading into the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. He and a dozen colleagues from the Republican Governance Group, which he chairs, were among the 13 House Republicans who voted for the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021.

Katko serves as ranking member on the House Committee on Homeland Security and as a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. He announced in January that he will not be seeking re-election in 2022.

The event is sponsored by the Howard G. and S. Louise Phanstiel Chair in Strategic Management and Leadership, held by University Professor Sean O’Keefe, and the Louis A. Bantle Chair in Business-Government Policy, held by Maxwell Dean and Professor of Public Administration and International Affairs David M. Van Slyke.
