DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for performing professional technical laboratory work involving the accurate completion of a variety of standardized tests and procedures in one or more specialized fields of forensic science. Under the general supervision of an administrative superior, with leeway permitted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative where applicable, an employee in this class may prepare specimens and operate a variety of laboratory equipment or they may perform manual tests following detailed instruction. Laboratory Technicians may work in several areas of the laboratory or specialize in just one. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Examines specimens submitted to the laboratory for chemical study and analysis.

Examines a wide variety of specimens for forensic purposes or toxicological studies.

Operates and maintains a variety of laboratory equipment including laboratory glassware.

Prepares a variety of reagents.

Performs and maintains quality control measures.

Records results of tests and assembles data for the preparation of reports.

Assists in maintaining laboratory quality control and quality assurance standards.

Aids the supervisor with inventory of supplies to facilitate preparation of purchase requisitions.

May receive and document evidence.

May enter data into various databases.

May maintain proper chain of custody records in regard to evidence storage and transfer.

May actively maintain the evidence vaults.

May testify in court of law as to chain of custody issues (not interpretation).

Participates in public health preparedness activities as trained and assigned.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SYILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of modern standard forensic laboratory practices, techniques, equipment, terminology and safety precautions.

Good knowledge of the practices governing the conduct of scientific laboratory tests.

Skill in the use, operation and care of modern laboratory equipment and apparatus.

Skill in performing standard laboratory routines.

Ability to perform assigned technical tasks according to exactly prescribed procedures and to make accurate observations and records of test results.

Ability to understand and follow technical oral and written instructions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an associate’s degree in chemistry, biology, medical laboratory technology or a related field; or,
  2. Completion of sixty (60) semester credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees which must have included a minimum of sixteen (16) semester credit hours of chemistry.

NOTE: Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by or New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a baccalaureate degree in the biological or chemical sciences may be substituted for (A), or (B).
