Electrical Fire Displaces Five Occupants

House-fire-small

Syracuse, N.Y. – On December 23rd, 2022 at 5:54 a.m., Syracuse firefighters were alerted by the 911 Center to a possible house fire in the 200 block of Mather Street. Crews arrived from Station 9 (Shuart Ave.) in less than three minutes to find a 2-story, wood-frame, 2-family residence with a fire on the enclosed front-porch. The occupants had been alerted by smoke detectors and were standing outside.

Firefighters quickly stretched handlines into place and extinguished the fire on the porch. Fire spread into the house and structure was successfully prevented with their quick response. Crews remained on scene to ensure no smoldering fire and to ventilate smoke from the house. The enclosed porches on the first and second floors both suffered damage. Syracuse Fire Investigators determined the fire originated on the front porch and the cause was electrical.

The five occupants of the first-floor apartment (two adults, three children) were displaced and assisted by the American Red Cross. There are no injuries to report. We thank our partners at the 911 Center, Syracuse Police, National Grid, and the American Red Cross.
