Democratic Mayoral Candidate Tests Positive for COVID-19 Corona Virus Continues to Evolve

Syracuse, New York — Councilmember and Democratic candidate for Mayor Khalid Bey, has tested positive for COVID-19 and has been quarantining since August 9, 2021. Following the confirmed positive test, in strict compliance with CDC guidelines, Bey has suspended all public appearances. His 14-day quarantine will end on August 24, 2021.
When the vaccine was made available earlier this year, Khalid’s medical team advised against him taking the vaccine before further studies could be done on his pre-existing condition that puts him at high risk of a potential severe reaction to the vaccine.

But, as the pandemic continues to pose an imminent threat to the community, and variants of the virus put both the vaccinated and unvaccinated at risk, Khalid has continued his consultations with his medical team. Once he has recovered, the doctors have cleared him to receive the vaccine. His priority is both his health and safety, and
the health and safety of the community around him.

While the virus continues to evolve, the science around the vaccine is clear. The vaccine is the most effective tool we have in bringing this pandemic to an end. And, as the Summer comes to an end, with more people spending more time indoors, and as schools and colleges return to in-person learning, Bey is encouraging everyone to do their part to prevent the spread of the Corona virus by washing their hands, wearing masks, socially distancing, and getting the vaccine. “The vaccine will save lives and protect our friends and neighbors – especially those who are immunocompromised or are too young to
receive the vaccine,” he says, “it’s as simple as that.”
