Councilman and Mayoral Candidate Khalid Bey Statement on Eva Fuld’s Death

I am deeply saddened by the death of Eva Fuld, an eighty-four-year-old resident of Syracuse murdered in her own home earlier this week. First and foremost, I offer my sincerest condolences to her family and friends. This is another horrific incident in the City of Syracuse that highlights the difficult road ahead for making our city safer. Crime reduction is a key part of ensuring a higher quality of life for all residents of Syracuse. To reduce crime, there must be a top-down approach to policing. The mayor must take charge and give directives to the police chief that ensure the safety of our residents. Crime reduction and police reform are not mutually exclusive, and there is a responsibility to reconcile the torn relations between our police and community. Taking bold action toward reduction and reform is the only way to ensure tragedies such as Eva Fuld’s do not happen in our City.
