The Central New York Community Foundation, in partnership with three other regional community foundations, is hosting a virtual event featuring author and economist Heather McGhee. Her bestseller, The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper, is a look at the true cost of racism – not just for people of color, but for everyone. The webinar-style event will be held at 7pm on January 17, 2023 – the National Day of Racial Healing. Attendees are asked to pre-register at cnycf.org/events/thesumofus.
For her book, McGhee embarked on a cross-country journey throughout America, where she explored what we lose when we buy into the idea that progress for some comes at the expense of others. She will share proof of what she calls the Solidarity Dividend: gains that come when people come together across race, to accomplish what we simply can’t do on our own.
An influential voice in the media and an NBC contributor, McGhee regularly appears on several news programs. Her opinions, writing, and research have appeared in numerous outlets, including the Washington Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Politico and National Public Radio.
This event is a collaboration between the Central New York Community Foundation, Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region and Rochester Area Community Foundation. More information can be found at https://cnycf.org/events/thesumofus/.
