City of Syracuse’s Common Council Votes to Opt-Out of Onondaga County’s Gas Tax Cap and Seeks Payment

All attending members of the Republican Caucus voted in favor of the reduction

Thanks to the new gas tax cap approved by the Onondaga County Legislature, residents of the City of Syracuse are among those now saving at the gas pump.

But this week, the Syracuse Common Council told the County that they are opting-out of the program, and because of that, will expect to be paid for any negative financial impact that the County’s gas tax cap may have on the City sales tax revenue. Legislators say that should total around $1 million dollars.

City Hall

Chairman James Rowley calls the City’s move frustrating, as the City and County have worked together successfully in recent years on issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, lead abatement, and other health services – all which are helping people who are suffering. “But when people are getting hammered by 40-year high inflation, this kind of suffering is something they don’t want to help with” he says of the City.

Most motorists are struggling with gas prices now around $5 a gallon. The tax break will save them money every time they fill up their car between now and November 30th, capping the tax on gas at $3 a gallon.

“We’re telling the residents that we get it” said Republican Majority Leader Brian May at a special meeting in April to vote on the gas tax cap. “It’s providing meaningful tax relief.”

All attending members of the Republican Caucus voted in favor of the reduction, as it will save county residents millions of dollars but have little effect on Onondaga County’s budget.

Your county legislators are working hard to help all those living and working in Onondaga County. The gas tax cap might be a small step, but it’s one that will save county residents and businesses in big ways.
