City of Syracuse Opens Online Public Comment Period for E. Brighton Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation Project

Syracuse, N.Y. – The City of Syracuse Department of Engineering is accepting public comments for the E. Brighton Avenue Bridge over the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway rehabilitation project scheduled to begin construction in spring 2021. The City, in collaboration with project engineer C&S Companies, has made the proposed project work available online for the public to review until the end of the comment period, Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Located at the southern end of I-481, the existing E. Brighton Avenue Bridge was originally constructed in 1984. Due to excessive deterioration of the existing bridge concrete deck and underlying concrete beams, both the City and the New York State Department of Transportation have proposed a full deck replacement.

The rarely used and substandard width sidewalk is proposed to be eliminated on the east side of the bridge, providing a wider roadway shoulder and a benefit to bicyclists crossing the structure. Additional work that may occur during the rehabilitation project includes: reconstruction of the top surfaces of concrete abutments and wingwalls; repair of concrete deterioration in the vertical surfaces of the abutments and wingwalls; reconstruction of the concrete and asphalt roadway sections that lead up to the bridge at each end; and replacement of the guide railing at all four corners of the bridge.

The total project cost, including design engineering and construction inspection/administration, is anticipated to be approximately $3.6 million. The design approval phase is scheduled to be completed in November 2020, at the conclusion of the online public comment period where questions, input and concerns can be submitted to eastbrightonbridge@cscos.com. Construction is expected to start in April 2021 and be completed October 2021.
