Voices: “City of Syracuse Advocacy” a Letter from Julie Abbott Candidate, NYS Senate District 48 Onondaga County Legislator, District 6

To the Editor: I am a mom on a mission to represent the City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, and Cayuga County in the New York State Senate. For too long, Albany politicians, like my opponent Rachel May, have failed our City and region by playing politics and getting bogged down by persistent scandals – instead of focusing on what’s important. I stand for something different.

As a local public servant and career problem solver, I have a proven track record of delivering real results for our community.

That’s why I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight a sample of what I have accomplished for the City of Syracuse specifically:

Invested In Our Children’s Education: From my role on the Skaneateles Board of Education to today on the Onondaga County Legislature, I have been a leading advocate in our community for education and a bright future for ALL children. I know in my heart that your Zip Code should NOT determine your success in life. That’s why, I firmly supported funding the Syracuse STEAM School and lobbied hard to ensure that this project was approved.

Expanded Affordable & Senior Housing: Recognizing that a lack of housing stock means less affordable and less senior housing options, I supported a grant program to expand Onondaga County’s housing stock by incentivizing the construction of new housing. The size of the grants will, by design, encourage the development of more affordable housing and more senior housing, and directly benefit the City of Syracuse and our Central New York region.

Addressed The Lead Paint Crisis: Understanding the pervasiveness of lead issues in our community, I have supported expanding lead funding and the creation of a workforce development program through the Fowler PSLA to prepare Syracuse students for licensing and a career in lead abatement.

Delivered Relief During The Pandemic: I had the crucial role of Chairing the Onondaga County Legislature’s Health & Human Services Committee during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Seeking to ensure that no area of our community was left behind, I pushed for an equitable virus response and vocally advocated for testing and vaccination clinics on the City’s Southside that addressed healthcare deserts and racial & income inequalities. It is with this dedicated service in mind, that I humbly ask for your vote. In the State Senate, I will build off this record of success, work with both parties, and be a true independent voice for our community.

Sincerely,

Julie Abbott Candidate, NYS Senate District 48
Onondaga County Legislator, District 6
