Assemblymember Hunter Pushing for End of Driver’s License Suspensions

Support of legislation ending traffic debt arrests and license suspensions

Assemblymember Pamela J. Hunter (D-Syracuse) held a press conference in Syracuse to announce her support of her bill that would prevent the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) from suspending driver’s licenses due to unpaid traffic tickets (A.7463-A).

Senator Tim Kennedy, the bill’s sponsor in the state Senate, will be hosting an event in Buffalo, while the “Free to Drive” campaign, a national group lobbying for the measure in New York and other states, will be holding an event in Washington, D.C.

Hunter noted that her legislation would help ensure that people aren’t penalized for being poor and would provide motorists with manageable repayment options based on their income.
