Members of local circus company CirqOvation will be performing for students at Syracuse’s Dr. Weeks Elementary School. Students will be entertained by a variety of gravity-defying acts including plate spinning, feather balancing, and scarf juggling. A school-wide event is planned for 9:30 a.m. which media is invited to. CirqOvation performers will also be doing individual workshops with students in various grades throughout the day.

OCC’s chapter of honor society Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), which is ranked 3rd in the world out of nearly 1,300 chapters, is bringing CirqOvation to Dr. Weeks Elementary as part of its Honors In Action project. The focus of this year’s effort is “play.” Through research students learned many people don’t have access to play for a variety of reasons. PTK students wanted to create a play-related opportunity for students at Dr. Weeks. Many of the students at Dr. Weeks are refugees and/or come from challenging backgrounds. This event will provide them with a new experience while also highlighting something positive happening in the Syracuse City School District. PTK students will spend the day at the school, assisting with workshops. One of OCC’s PTK students, Nick Chai from Fayetteville-Manlius High School, is a performer with CirqOvation and played a key role in bringing the event to Dr. Weeks.
