For the last 20 plus years, since manufacturing had abandoned Syracuse we’ve seen the withdrawal of Carrier, New Venture Gear, General Motors, and many more manufacturers. CenterState CEO along with New York State, Onondaga County and city of Syracuse officials have worked to attract new businesses to Central New York.
We invested our energies in the Syracuse Surge concept. A series of programs and actions designed to alleviate our concentrated poverty. The Syracuse Surge cobbled together various programs into a cohesive plan that the community could be supportive of. Plans for Central Technical High School to become a regional STEAM school. Changes in housing near downtown involves a major change in public housing, as Syracuse Housing Authority plans to demolish large portions of what is now known as Pioneer Homes, Central Village and McKinney Manor. Blueprint 15 has become the initiative designed to restructure Syracuse Housing Properties to allow for more mixed income housing while maintaining the same number of affordable units. And then there’s Interstate 81 the viaduct through the city of Syracuse slated to be torn down in 2026.
The first sign that we’ve been successful in landing jobs was construction of the Amazon Fulfillment Center. This company selected Onondaga County as the location of one their largest most advanced centers for distributing their massive selection of goods. Their investment included a Distribution Center which provides expedited delivery for our area, subject to the size of packages the center handles.
On October 4th, 2022, after decades of work, CenterState CEO, Onondaga County and the city of Syracuse landed a big one. Onondaga County’s investment in the White Pine Commercial Park site required months of preparation, as the County purchased houses and land in Clay, NY. The goal, create the perfect spot for one of the world’s largest “Chip” manufacturers.
Micron came to town and announced they’d be investing 100 billion dollars over the next 20 years to create 9,000 direct jobs. There are an additional 40,000 jobs including suppliers, contractors and supporting roles to this massive project. Micron is a leading manufacturer of digital media products.
This was a huge deal as Senator Chuck Schumer, gathered state and local representatives to pose proudly with Micron President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra as he made an announcement, of his company locating one of their facilities in Central New York. For those using mobile devices click here to view.
Micron Makes it Official. They’re coming to Central New York!
As Mehrotra appeared in Syracuse, the company based in Boise, Idaho made the announcement official in a release.
“Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MU), one of the world’s largest semiconductor companies and the only U.S.-based manufacturer of memory, today announced plans to build the largest semiconductor fabrication facility in the history of the United States. The new megafab will increase domestic supply of leading-edge memory and create nearly 50,000 New York jobs, including approximately 9,000 high paying Micron jobs.
Micron intends to invest up to $100 billion over the next 20-plus years to construct a new megafab in Clay, New York, with the first phase investment of $20 billion planned by the end of this decade. This represents the largest private investment in New York state history. Micron’s investment in Onondaga County, New York, will complement the company’s previously announced high-volume manufacturing fab in Boise, Idaho. Micron will design, build and operate the facility in accordance with its sustainability goals. The site could eventually include four 600,000 square foot cleanrooms, for a total of 2.4 million square feet of cleanroom space – the size of approximately 40 U.S. football fields.”

Historic Investment in Community and Workforce Development
Micron and the state of New York are announcing a historic $500 million investment in communities underrepresented and workforce development over the duration of the project. Micron will invest $250 million in the Green CHIPS Community Investment Fund. Micron will work with the state and other partners to form a local Community Advisory Committee to provide inputs into additional future investments from the Fund.
An additional $250 million is expected to be invested, with $100 million from New York and $150 million from local, other state and national partners.
