Fire Prevention Week: October 9-15, 2022

Syracuse, N.Y. – Next week is the start of the Syracuse Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Week, with this year being the 100th anniversary.

A kick-off event is being held at the Salt City Market, 484 S. Salina Street, to announce the week’s events on Sunday Oct. 9th at 2 p.m. Please join for remarks from SFD leadership and the Mayor’s office.

There will be various fire safety events around the City during the week, with the grand finale—an open house at Station 17 (S. Midler and Burnet Ave) on Oct. 15th 11 a.m.-3 p.m. with fire/police/EMS agencies, community organizations, family fun and fire safety demonstrations for everyone to enjoy.

The week is scheduled by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) on these dates to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 that destroyed 17,500 buildings, killed hundreds, and cost $5.4 billion in today’s dollars. The NFPA is a global non-profit organization that coordinates this worldwide initiative, among other important duties.

  • Sunday Oct. 9th 2 p.m.: Salt City Market Community Room (484 S. Salina Street)

Kick-Off event with cookies, hot chocolate, fire safety presentation, remarks from Mayor Walsh and more.

  • Monday Oct. 10th, 10 a.m.: Central Village Boys & Girls Club (212 Van Buren Street)

Teaching the community how to create a home escape plan and Fire safety lessons.

  • Tuesday Oct. 11th 5:30 p.m.: North Side Learning Center (501 Park Street)

Creating home escape plans and teaching fire safety to the refugee community.

  • Wednesday Oct. 12th – Huntington Elementary School (400 Sunnycrest Road)

Mock Fire Rescue

  • Thursday Oct. 13th – Syracuse City Schools

On-duty Syracuse firefighters read books to 2nd graders across City.

  • Saturday Oct. 15th 11 a.m.-3 p.m. – Open House (Station 17, 2317 Burnet Ave and adjacent Sheridan Park)
  • Fire safety station and lessons
  • Fire station tours
  • Fire trucks, police cars, AMR ambulance and much more
  • Food, bounce houses, and entertainment
  • Poster contest
