The Fayetteville Manlius community suffered a devastating loss with the suicide of Jay Lu, a sophomore at FM High School, over the weekend. This tragedy occurred on the heels of calls from students and parents to address mental health concerns in our school community.
In September 2021 Onondaga County offered a free program to schools countywide to provide mental health councilors on site to assist in addressing the increased need to treat the mental health of our children.
FM was the only district in the county to decline these services. This decision was made solely by Dr. Tice, the superintendent, without any involvement of parents, students, or the school board as a whole.
In response to this most recent event and in light of not being listened to, the student body has planned a walk out at the high school at 9:30am Monday morning March 28. The school has also planned a vigil at 7:00pm Monday evening. We ask that the privacy of the Lu family be respected during this difficult time.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
