Deputy Discovers Handgun during Traffic Stop Near City Line

City of Syracuse, New York – The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office reports that a Town of Onondaga man is facing several weapons charges after fleeing from a Deputy during a traffic stop.

On the morning of March 21st at approximately 11:04 A.M., a deputy conducted a traffic stop on McDonald Road near Reinman Road near the city line, on a 2009 Nissan for violating the NYS Vehicle & Traffic Law. During the traffic stop, the driver provided a false name and sped off into the parking lot of Corcoran High School. The suspect drove the vehicle to the rear of the school where he jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot through the woods towards the school’s sports facilities. The suspect, who was reaching for his waistband, ignored the deputy’s several commands to stop, prompting the deputy to deploy his taser. The suspect was taken into custody and a search of the area conducted by a sheriff’s K9 revealed a loaded stolen .40 caliber handgun.

The driver, 26-year-old Jay Hill of Ponderosa Drive, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the 2nd degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the 3rd degree, criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of stolen property, unlawful fleeing a police officer in the 3rd degree, false personation, resisting arrest. Hill was also issued traffic tickets for reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation in the 3rd degree, unregistered motor vehicle, improper plates and failing to signal when making a turn.

Hill is scheduled to be arraigned sometime this evening in Centralized Arraignment Court.
