Crews Battle Intense Fire on Josephine Street

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Syracuse Fire Department was called to 125 Josephine Street at 11:21 P.M. yesterday for a fire in a two-family home.  The first units were on scene in less than two minutes, and reported heavy fire conditions in the rear of the structure.  After making entry, firefighters encountered significant fire on the first floor, second floor, and in portions of the attic.  Working through zero visibility and tremendous heat, crews quickly searched both apartments for trapped occupants.  A hole was cut in the roof in an effort to release some of the heat and smoke from the building.

It took more than 40 minutes to fully extinguish the fire, and it was determined that everyone was able to get out of the building prior to the fire department’s arrival.  Because of the intensity of the flames and yesterday’s heat and humidity, extra crews had to be called to the scene for assistance.  All firefighters were rotated through a rehab sector, where their vital signs were assessed and they were allowed to rehydrate.  No injuries were reported.

The damage to the building was significant.  The American Red Cross will be assisting the displaced families with temporary shelter and other needs.  AMR, National Grid, and the Syracuse Police Department also responded to the scene.  Members of the SFD Fire Investigation Bureau are currently working to determine the origin and cause of the fire.  This was the 47th major structure fire in Syracuse this year.
