Syracuse, N.Y. – Syracuse fire crews were busy early Friday morning. At 3:22 A.M., firefighters were called to 216 West Brighton Avenue for a reported structure fire. The first units arrived in just over two minutes, and found heavy fire conditions in a 2 ½ story wood-frame vacant house. The building was searched for victims, and it was determined that no one was inside. It took approximately thirty minutes to fully extinguish the blaze. Neighboring structures were not damaged.
A few hours later, at 7:36 A.M., an apartment fire was reported at 381 Fobes Avenue, between Beacon Road and Dunlap Avenue. Firefighters were on the scene in three minutes, and immediately began searching the multi-unit apartment building for trapped or endangered occupants. The fire was brought under control in less than 20 minutes, and the bulk of the damage was contained to the apartment of origin. The American Red Cross will be assisting the occupants of the apartment with shelter and other needs.
National Grid, AMR, and the Syracuse Police Department responded to both incidents, and no injuries were reported. Members of the Fire Investigation Bureau are currently working to determine the cause of each fire. There have been 46 major structure fires in Syracuse so far this year.
