Department of Parks, Recreation & Youth Programs Announce Outdoor Pools to Open Beginning June 24

Advance registration required for open swim and lap swim

Syracuse, N.Y. – Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced the City of Syracuse Department of Parks, Recreation & Youth Programs will open outdoor pools on Thursday, June 24 and Thursday, July 1, and require advance registration.

The pools scheduled to open on June 24 are Kirk Park, Onondaga Park, Schiller Park and Thornden Park. The pools scheduled to open on July 1 are Lincoln Park, McKinley Park and Wilson Park.

Reservation times for open swim will include three sessions, seven days a week:

  • 12 – 1:45 p.m.
  • 2 – 3:45 p.m.
  • 4 – 5:45 p.m.

Advance registration, first introduced last year, is being continued this summer to ensure safe pool area occupancy at all times.

Open swim time slots can be reserved by calling the individual pools from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., up to two days in advance, for up to 10 people. Open swim is free of charge. The phone numbers are:

Children under the minimum height requirement must be with a parent or responsible adult over 18 years old. A maximum of three children per adult are allowed. The accompanying adult must be in the water within an arms-reach of children at all times, even when a child is wearing a U.S. Coast Guard approved flotation device. To view the full list of pool rules and acceptable swimwear visit http://www.syrgov.net/Parks/poolrules.html

Reservation times for adult lap swim will begin being accepted for Schiller Pool and Thornden Pool on Syracuse.Recdesk.com beginning Thursday, June 17 at 8 a.m. and seven days in advance after. Sessions will be one-hour, Monday – Friday. Session times are:

  • 6:30 – 7:30 a.m.
  • 7:30 – 8:30 a.m.
  • 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.

Lap swim admission is $3 for adults ages 16 – 64 and free for 65 and older. Existing coupon book tickets will be honored. Refunds will only be offered if sessions are cancelled by the department after registration opens, minus the 2.75% transaction fee.

The following health and safety precautions will be taken at the pools:

  • If you are not feeling well, please stay home.
  • Mask wearing is strongly encouraged on the pool deck, but not required for fully vaccinated patrons.
  • Participants must remain six feet apart from others unless they reside in the same household.

Swimming lessons, water exercise classes and swim teams are canceled for the summer season. Burnet Pool will remain closed this summer for repairs. The indoor pools at Huntington School, Valley, and the Southwest Community Center will also remain closed through the summer.
