Washington – U.S. Rep. John Katko (NY-24) on Monday January 25th, released the following statement applauding the Biden Administration for moving forward on efforts to place Harriet Tubman’s likeness on the $20 bill:
“It’s welcome news that the Biden Administration is committed to placing Harriet Tubman’s likeliness on the $20 bill. This is a fitting and overdue tribute to a woman who escaped slavery and devoted her entire life to advancing freedom and equality for all people, regardless of their race or gender. In Central New York, we are honored that Harriet Tubman settled in our community and take great pride in celebrating her incredible legacy. It’s why, throughout my time in Congress, I’ve pushed for the enactment of the bipartisan Harriet Tubman Tribute Act alongside the late Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, and I will gladly partner with the Biden Administration on any initiative that would accelerate this important tribute.”
In 2015, 2017, and 2019, Rep. Katko introduced the Harriet Tubman Tribute Act alongside the late Congressman Elijah E. Cummings. This bill would direct the Secretary of the Treasury to place the likeness of Harriet Tubman on the $20 Federal Reserve note.
The Congressman has long been an advocate for recognizing Harriet Tubman. After arriving in Congress in 2015, Rep. Katko worked closely with local advocates and the National Parks Service to ensure a smooth transition in the designation of the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn as a national park. In 2017, Rep. Katko celebrated the Harriet Tubman Home’s official national park designation.
