Attorney General James Announces Support for Kentucky Governor’s Call to Release Evidence in Breonna Taylor Case

NYS Attorney General Latitia James

New York – In response to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear’s call to release grand jury evidence from the Breonna Taylor case, including interviews, transcripts, and ballistic evidence, Attorney General Letitia James issued the following statement:

“Today I join Governor Beshear in calling for the release of grand jury evidence in Breonna Taylor’s case. As I’ve argued throughout my entire career, and especially following the death of Eric Garner, the grand jury process needs major reform. The public must know all the available facts of the case to provide the transparency, fairness, and integrity necessary to ensure justice for the victims and their families. It is clear that secret proceedings behind closed doors do not work; we must have the ability to review every transcript, every piece of evidence, and every witness statement with our own eyes and make our own judgements. The only way we can hope to meaningfully address the problem is through specific legislative actions, special investigations, or policy changes.

“My thoughts continue to be with Breonna Taylor and her family during this painful process. It is clear they did not receive justice this week, and I stand with the millions of people throughout this country, and across the world, in the hope that they soon get the answers they deserve.”
