Syracuse Fire Department Responds to Roney Lane Apartment Fire

Syracuse, N.Y.(May 15) – Syracuse Firefighters responded to an apartment building fire on the South side, 9 hours after a house fire on the North side of the city.  At approximately 1:52 a.m. fire crews were dispatched to 106 Roney Lane for a reported structure fire.  Engine Co. 8 and Truck 8 (2412 South Salina Street) were the first to arrive.  They found a three story brick apartment building with smoke coming from multiple windows and a victim at a third floor window above the fire.  A ladder was placed to the victim, but they were evacuated down the interior stairs.

As additional firefighters arrived, a systematic search for more victims was performed and hose lines were stretched into the building.  The fire was located in a second floor bedroom and extinguished.  Some of the occupants self-evacuated upon hearing the fire alarm.  Some occupants had to be escorted out by the fire department.  Residents that lived in other areas of the building were sheltered in place until the smoke could be cleared in the public hallways.

Fire Investigators report that the origin of the fire was a bedroom in apartment 23.  The cause has been determined as careless disposal of smoking materials.  The occupant of the fire apartment is being assisted by the Red Cross.  AMR, National Grid and the Syracuse Police were also on the scene.  There were no reported injuries.  Firefighters were on the scene until 3:29 a.m.
