Washington, D.C. — U.S. Rep. John Katko (NY-24) released the following statement after House Democrats canceled a vote on legislation that would raise discretionary spending caps:
“This week, Democrats allowed the progressive, far left members of their party to hijack the legislative process. While I would have voted ‘no’ on the proposed bill to lift spending caps without offsetting the cost, it is becoming increasingly concerning that Democrats in the House are punting on the basic obligations of Congress and pandering to the progressive members of the party.
“Producing a budget is one of the foremost responsibilities of Congress. But Democrats seem more interested in pursuing far left policies – like the Green New Deal and out-of-touch plans on healthcare – than fulfilling the basic obligations of the legislature. Instead of yielding to progressive cries to dramatically increase government spending, Democrats should work together with Republicans to produce a bipartisan and fiscally responsible budget to address our nation’s growing debt.”
