Syracuse Eastside Neighborhood Farmers’ Market Open for season

Syracuse, NY — JUNE 28, 2007 — The Syracuse Eastside Neighborhood Farmers’ Market will celebrate its 2nd week of operation in Lexington Park (intersection of East Genesee Street and Columbus Avenue). The market will be open from 3:00pm to 8:00pm every Thursday until the last day of the market, currently slated for October 25, 2007. This community-driven market features fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables, herbs, potted plants, and locally made jams and sauces.
Last week’s grand opening celebration was well-received by the local community and participating farmers.

Throughout the summer, the market will be held in conjunction with the Westcott Community Center Arts and Education Project Summer Art Series, a free program, featuring local artists who will provide art projects and educational opportunities for children ranging from 5-14 years of age.
Other programming throughout the summer will include live music, a health and wellness fair, a local craft festival, a multicultural food day, and cooking demonstrations. We welcome families to come and enjoy the market, the park, and scheduled events.

The Syracuse Eastside Neighborhood Farmers’ Market is supported by the Central New York Community Foundation. The Central New York Community Foundation has served the community for 80 years, receiving, managing and distributing charitable funds to not-for-profit organizations in Onondaga and Madison Counties. The Community Foundation has over $117 million in assets, and awards nearly $5 million in grants to not-for-profit organizations annually.

The Syracuse Eastside Neighborhood Farmers’ Market is sponsored by the Westcott Community Center and has partnerships with the Friends of Lexington Park, Westcott Community Center Arts and Education Project, Farmers’ Market Federation of New York, Urban Delights Youth Farmstand Project, SUNY ESF Center for Community Design Research, and Grace Episcopal Church.

The mission of the Syracuse Eastside Neighborhood Farmers’ Market is to host a market that improves neighborhood food security, supports local farmers and businesses, teaches youth entrepreneurship skills, while enriching the cultural heritage and community life of Syracuse’s Eastside neighborhood through educational and cultural programming.

Farmers participating in the Syracuse Eastside Neighborhood Farmers’ Market will accept WIC and Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) coupons. Also, farmers will accept food stamp benefits through wireless EBT technology offered by the market.
