Elevator Constructors Recruit Apprentices

SYRACUSE, NY (06/29/07)– The International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local 62, will conduct recruitment on August 15 for six elevator/escalator constructor and modernizer apprentices, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today.
Applications can be obtained at the local, 615 W. Genesee St., Syracuse, from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., on August 15.
The committee requires that applicants:
∙ Be at least 18 years old.
∙ Have a high school or general equivalency diploma – proof required after selection for the program.
∙ Live within the local’s geographic jurisdiction – all of St. Lawrence, Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, Chenango, Broome, Tioga, Cayuga, Cortland, Tompkins, Onondaga, Seneca and Franklin Counties; parts of Madison and Delaware Counties.
∙ Take a written examination, $10 fee, and have an oral interview.
∙ Pass a pre-employment drug test.
∙ Be physically able to do the work, which includes lifting, climbing and working from heights.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
