Syracuse, N.Y. – The Syracuse Fire Department was called to three structure fires in a span of two hours early Monday morning. There have been six major fires in the city since Saturday.
At 12:47 A.M., crews were called to 1304 South Avenue for a fire in a vacant house. The first units on scene reported a heavy volume of fire visible in the 2 ½ story wood frame structure. It took over 30 minutes to knock down the flames, and one firefighter was transported to University Hospital for treatment of minor burns.
At 2:23 A.M., a passerby called 911 to report a house on fire at 146 Glenwood Avenue. Several of the companies that had been operating at the earlier South Avenue fire, just a half mile away, were also dispatched to this incident. Crews reported that the entire front of the house was on fire upon arrival. The fire took approximately 40 minutes to fully extinguish, and that structure was also vacant.
At 2:45 A.M., the firefighters operating at 146 Glenwood Avenue noticed flames coming from a vacant structure across the street. The incident commander immediately called for additional companies to respond to that location: 131 Glenwood Avenue. That fire was brought under control in about fifteen minutes.
National Grid, AMR, and the Syracuse Police Department assisted the Syracuse Fire Department at all of these incidents. All three fires are currently under investigation. No civilian injuries were reported.
